This talk focuses on deploying AI and its growing potential in schools, including Norwegian schools. While the processing of enormous amounts of personal data creates new opportunities and may render teaching more efficient and individually oriented, it raises challenges one must be aware of before one starts processing personal data of pupils. While the GDPR is technology-neutral and, therefore, does not specifically regulate AI, it provides principles for the processing of personal data and addresses risks of such types of processing as profiling and automated decision making. While we have witnessed how using AI at schools may go wrong, let us find out how we can improve teaching in Norwegian schools by using AI in a fair, predictable, safe and transparent way.
Malgorzata Cyndecka is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Bergen. She is also affiliated with the Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE) at the UiB. She works with amongst others privacy, data protection and the GDPR. Currently, she participates in the Norwegian Data Protection Authority’s “Sanbox for responsible AI” with a project concerning using AI at schools for the purpose of supporting teachers in adjusting learning to the needs and progress of every single pupil. Malgorzata is most interested in finding solutions that will allow us to benefit from AI and its potential while protecting our privacy and data and building trust in advanced technology.
As one of Malgorzata’s passions is teaching, she is particularly happy to be involved in a newly established group of experts at the UiB who will design new courses in digital competence that will be offered to all UiB students. In this respect, she is responsible for the GDPR course.
